New Jersey e-bike laws (2026)
State law summary
New Jersey's 2026 law is narrower than widely reported: e-bikes assisting up to 20 mph keep bicycle-style treatment, while 21-28 mph bikes (the old Class 3) are now motorized bicycles with license/permit and registration requirements. Class 1/2 labels were repealed in favor of the single low-speed category.
